World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Cuts After US Financial Pullout

The global health agency disclosed plans to cut its workforce by nearly a fourth – totaling more than 2,000 positions – by mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Substantial Reorganization

The decision comes after the US, formerly the organization's largest donor, pulled out financial support earlier this year.

The US government had been contributing about 18% of the organization's total funding, causing a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Projected Workforce Reductions

According to organizational estimates, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.

The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes job cuts, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"The past year has been one of the most difficult in our existence, as we undertook a challenging but necessary journey of prioritisation and restructuring," commented the agency's leader.

Budget Shortfall Persists

This Switzerland-headquartered body now faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a quarter of its total funding.

The figure marks an reduction from a prior projected shortfall of $1.7bn reported in spring.

Excluded Funding

These financial calculations exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current discussions with multiple contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the current unfunded portion of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in previous years, attributing this to multiple reasons:

  • A smaller total budget
  • Initiation of a new donor outreach campaign
  • Higher in member states' required contributions

This restructuring process is currently nearing its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
