Surprise as Government Supporters Acquire the Nation's Leading Newspaper

Journalists at Hungary's most popular publication have shown disbelief after a media conglomerate viewed as friendly to nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's political faction, Fidesz, purchased the popular daily from its previous Swiss owners.

Context of Acquisition

The purchase, which coincides with Hungary prepares for pivotal elections next year, is generally viewed as another move to strengthen government influence on the news outlets.

A Fidesz-friendly media group, Indamedia, stated on Friday it had bought a collection of Hungarian titles, including the fashion publication and Blikk, a influential tabloid whose digital edition attracts approximately three million web users monthly.

Management Changes

Blikk's outgoing chief editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, stated on Monday that he and another senior manager were leaving in "common understanding" with the new owner.

They had been hired seven months ago to revamp Blikk, "focusing not on sensationalism but on compelling journalism" and to be "more reader-centered, covering political affairs, economics, and cultural topics," he said on Facebook.

Staff Responses

Employees of Blikk said they were shocked. "I almost had a medical emergency when I heard the announcement," stated one journalist, who wished to be anonymous. "For me, this is morally unacceptable."

Blikk has announced a fresh chief editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Press Environment Issues

Numerous reporters who have decided to stay say they are in a challenging situation as there are not many other publications remaining where they could seek employment.

Throughout the previous 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling state-aligned news ecosystem to strengthen his public perception and public opinion ratings.

Political Timing

Whereas major media deals have typically occurred either post-election or during a calm political phase, the purchase of Ringier Hungary comes under six months prior to April's general election.

Blikk was viewed as a main goal for Orbán and his party at a period when surveys are signalling that they have a genuine competitor for the initial occasion in more than a decade.

Opposition Reaction

The rival candidate, Péter Magyar, whose Tisza political group is campaigning on commitments to eradicate entrenched dishonesty, has been direct about Orbán's "media machine" and the damage he asserts it has caused to Hungary's democracy.

He has condemned the Ringier Hungary transaction, declaring it constitutes another attempt by Orbán to strengthen his grip over Hungary's news publications.

Publication's Significance

Though Blikk is a tabloid, renowned for its celebrity news and dramatic titles, in the last several years it has also published many pieces on possible misconduct.

"The publication represents by far the most read newspaper in Hungary, a sector dominator," said a communications specialist. "The web version has become surprisingly popular in recent times, becoming the fourth most visited website in Hungary. If partisan content is published by such extensively consumed and mainstream outlets, it will have an impact on the general population."

International Context

For more than a ten-year period, Hungary has served as a model for other "authoritarian-leaning governments" globally.

Previous US leaders and their allies have consistently commended Orbán's Hungary even as it plunges in journalistic liberty ratings.

In 2022, Orbán spoke to a meeting of US traditionalist groups that the path to power necessitated "owning press organizations."

Past Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's administration enacted a law that imposed state authority over the main media regulator and put the national media outlet in the hands of loyalists.

Ownership Details

Indamedia is 50% owned by Mikló Vaszily, a state-aligned entrepreneur who is also CEO of a pro-government private channel.

In a statement, Indamedia's second proprietor and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, said: "By obtaining of Ringier Hungary, the group is gaining a well-performing press organization of equivalent magnitude to Indamedia, with established industry presence and recognized names that have significant influence in the Hungarian press environment."

Ringier stated in a communication that its choice to divest was "motivated entirely by business strategy factors and our concentration on our main internet businesses in Hungary."

A state communicator was sought for comment.
