German Far-Right Dictating the Public Agenda, Research Reveals

Established parties in power are increasingly allowing the far right to set the public discourse, as per a recent study conducted in Germany.

Researchers found that this phenomenon has inadvertently helped radical groups by validating their viewpoints and spreading them to a broader audience.

Analysis Based on Over 20 Years of Media Reporting

The results, released in the academic journal on political studies, utilized an computerized content review of over 520,000 articles from a half-dozen German publications.

Berlin-based scholars observed that as the far right moved from fringe issues in the 1990s era to core subjects like integration and immigration, mainstream parties progressively adjusted their messaging in reaction.

This adjustment boosted the dissemination of these concepts and signaled to voters that such positions were acceptable.

Consequences for Democratic Systems

"Political communication by established political groups is crucial in the electoral success of the radical right," explained a political sociologist participating in the study.

"This element has been overlooked," she added.

The impact was evident even when mainstream parties were criticising the radical faction. "You're still giving them attention," the researcher remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a struggle for visibility, this attention is key."

Mainstreaming Effect Across Europe

While the study was centered around Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to affect nations across the European continent.

"This is frequently observed in European news outlets," explained another co-author. "Radical groups makes a statement and everybody begins discussing it for one week."

"Even if you're opposing it, you're repeating it," he added.

Hardening of Political Rhetoric

At times, leaders have also hardened their language to match that of the radical right.

In a recent interview, a then German chancellor called for large-scale deportations and pushed for them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."

Comparable examples can be observed across Europe, as elected officials from countries ranging from the United Kingdom to the French Republic embrace the rhetoric of the far right, especially on immigration.

This has created an echo chamber that was unthinkable a ten years prior.

Core Issue: Who Sets the Narrative?

"{If you're a centrist political group and you are talking about societal topics – migration, integration – in a way that is determined by the pace of the radical right, that's the essence of narrative control," clarified a study author.

Some political parties have gone one step further, attempting to emulate the strict agenda of the far right, despite studies indicates that doing so leads voters to vote for the radical faction.

Progressive Impact and Voter Awareness

The scope of information collected revealed that the influence of far-right groups had been gradual and had grown over time.

"Voter awareness doesn't change from one day to another," commented a co-author. "But if you encounter this negative framing around immigration frequently, and it is being spread not only by radical groups but also, for instance, by mainstream parties, then of course this narrative travels further."

Need for Mainstream Groups to Develop Their Own Discourses

The study highlighted the need for established political parties to carve out their own narratives, particularly on subjects such as migration and assimilation, instead of constantly trailing after the radical right.

"It resembles a choreography," explained one author. "If the conductor is radical and you're reacting to it, you lose the ability to choose which tune should be playing."
